1968 Boston Marathon Champion. Amby
ran his fastest marathon in 1968 at Fukuoka, Japan. His time
of 2:14:28.8 was one second off the American record, then held by
Buddy Edelen.
Born August 19, 1946, Amby grew
up in New London, Connecticut. He attended Fitch High School,
where he was coached by John J. Kelley on
the cross-country team beginning in his junior year. Coach
Kelley describes the young Amby as, "A quiet but involved
kid. He could usually be found reading, and would never slack
off in his workouts. Amby was a focused competitor."
He attended Weslyan University in Middletown,
Connecticut, running cross-country. He favored LSD training
(long slow distance), running 100 to140 mile weeks at 6:30 to
7:00 minute per mile pace.
After his Boston win, Amby turned his
attention toward the 1968 Olympics. A calf injury eliminated his Olympic
hopes. Amby went on to become the editor of Runner's World Magazine.
